Description

Great Names in Irish History
A collection of fine cast figures

De Valera (1882-1975) began his career teaching mathematics. In 1913 armed with a growing sense of patriotism he joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood and took a leading part in the 1916 Easter Rising. For this he was sentenced to death but was later reprieved.

Upon release from jail he quickly emerged as a national political figure and played a decisive role in the Treaty negotiations of 1920-21 with England. In 1926 De Valera formed his own political party called Fianna Fail. From 1932 until 1948 the party held the balance of power in the Irish government with De Valera as Prime Minister. In 1937 he wrote a new constitution for Ireland which is still in effect today. He was elected President of the League of Nations in 1938 and through his efforts to maintain world peace and then Irish neutrality during the 2nd World War he gained international respect and recognition.

After two more years as Prime Minister during the '50's he became President of the Republic in 1959, a post he held until 1973. He died at the age of ninety-two in 1975.

For over half a century De Valera steered Ireland through the storms of rebellion, civil war and independence. He won for his country international acclain as a free sovereign democratic nation. Triumphant after 800 years of foreign rule.

This range of 54mm pewter figures are mounted on wooden plinths with metal plaques that have the embossed name of the figure. Plinth colour and design may vary without notice.
The figures are painted by experienced Irish artists and were designed by internationally famous miniature designer Chris Tubb.

Antique Finish means that the figure is polished first then undercoated in a black paint and that is skillfully rubbed off the highlights and left in the creases and depths so the miniature is brought into strong contrast. This is an excellant alternative to fully painted versions of the miniature.
