American Civil War 1861 - 1865 The Civil War was the culmination of four decades of intense sectional conflict and reflected deep seated differences between the North and the South. Underscoring sectional differences, the labor force in the South included nearly four million enslaved blacks. Although the slaveholding planter class formed a small minority of the population, it dominated Southern politics and society. Slaves were the largest single investment in the South, and the fear of slave unrest ensured the loyalty of non-slaveholders. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 temporarily settled the issue by establishing a line separating free and slaves territory. Conflict resumed, when the United States boundaries were extended westward to the Pacific. In 1850 California was admitted as a free state and Utah and New Mexico were added as two new territories. When the war ended 620,000 had been killed, and many more wounded. The war settled the question of the permanence of the Union. The war expanded the authority of the federal government. The U.S. Congress enacted much of the legislation to which the South had objected.

Horse - Flesh av927. Add White av951 to Flesh av927 and brush over horse to highlight.
Rider - Grey av995. Leave to dry. Add White av951 to Grey av995 and dry brush. Repeat the last stage twice more. Highlight creases with White av951.
Black belts on horse & rider - Black av950.
Sword - Black av950 and silver mixed.

BISHOP

Cap jacket & trousers are painted using the same colour and technique as the knight rider.
Sash - Red 926 trimmed with old gold av878.
Sword - Black av950 mixed with Silver.

PAWNS

Cap, jacket & trousers - same as knight.
Rifle - Hull Red Brown av985.
Handle of gun - Hull Red Brown av985 mixed with White av951.

KING

Trousers - av819 Sand. When dry, add white and dry brush to highlight.
Coat - Light brown av929 washed down with Hull Red Brown av985.
Waistcoat - Light brown av929 and White av951 mixed together.
Collar & shoes - Grey av995. On top of shoes, Hull Red Brown av985 to highlight.
Book - Red av947.
Pages - White av951.
Hair - Light brown av929 and White av951 mixed together, with a wash down of Hull Red Brown av985.

Trim of dress - Red av947 thinned down.
Dress - Grey blue av943. Add White av951 to Grey blue av943 to make squares on dress. Then line the dress with Red av947.
Glasses - Silver
Hair - Hull Red Brown av985 thinned down.
Hair net - Black av950 thinned down.

BASE

Black av950 shaded around standing area with Grey av995 and White av951 mixed and dry brushed.
